Remembrance - Hope

We used this Power Point file as part of an act of Remembrance last year. Our music team played ‘What a Wonderful World’ (made popular by Louis Armstrong) as the slides scrolled round. The idea for the music came from the film ‘Good Morning Vietnam’ used (in that case) as juxtaposition against the harsh images of war. However, rather than leave it at a place of hopelessness we wanted to consider the hope that Christ brings into all situations – including war. The music therefore goes on to provide a backdrop for the images of hope in conjunction with the Bible references.

A small point, the first slide entitled "World War 1" is actually a shot from World War 2 - the uniforms of the GIs are not from WW1, in fact the shot looks like it was taken following the liberation of a forced labour camp of some sort as teh striped clothing is typical of concentration/labour camps.

Just found the original it is Buchenwald Concentration Camp after it was liberated on April 11, 1945 by soldiers from the Sixth Armoured Division of the US Third Army

Oops! Thank you Peter for noticing - it's one of those things that is nicer to find out before hand rather than having a queue of knowledgeable people after the service... I'll make a start at finding an alternative image and will post another comment when I've updated the ppt.

All updated and done! The second slide is now depicting British soldiers in the trenches.

Should there be some text with slide 20? If there should be, could you please tell me what it is meant to be.

Used this tonight in our evening service where we didn't want a full blown Remembrance service, but felt it needed to be included in the theme. We didn't really have time to rehearse the song, so I used an mp3 instead (and tweaked the slide show slightly to fit the length... sorry!).

But it was really well received, and the choice of "What a wonderful world" to go with it was brilliant - the clash between the images and lyrics in the first half was profound, but then added to the hope in the second half.

Thanks for sharing this :) K
