Your Spirit Groans For Peace: Song for Ukraine
Sam and Andy Flannagan have written this song as a prayer with the Ukrainian people, joining with the Spirit as he groans and calling out for God to have mercy on our world. It could also be used at other times for intercession and lament. We have just added a second video with images of the conflict and Ukraine, made by Luke Middleton.
You can download both of the videos for free to use in streaming or in-person services, or make use of the lead sheet and chord chart to have led live by your own musicians. There is an mp3 you can also use in worship and prayer.
VERSE 1
When evil comes upon us
we will stand before this house and implore you.
We cry in our distress,
you will hear our desperate prayer and deliver.
PRE CHORUS 1
This nation groans, foundations shaking,
terror stalks the streets today.
CHORUS 1
Your Spirit groans for peace,
your Spirit groans for truth,
your Spirit groans for justice,
we groan along with you.
VERSE 2
Though sword may come upon us,
we will stand before this house and implore you.
We cry in our distress,
you will hear our desperate prayer and deliver.
PRE CHORUS 2
This nation groans, your people quaking,
stay the hand of hate today.
CHORUS 2
Your Spirit groans for peace,
your Spirit groans for truth,
your Spirit groans for justice,
we groan along with you.
BRIDGE
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
[OPTIONAL VERSE 3]
Should famine come upon us,
we will stand before this house and implore you.
We cry in our distress,
you will hear our desperate prayer and deliver.
