Lifted Up - poem
Here is a poem which knits together two of the readings for the fourth Sunday in Lent (year B).
Extract from the poem:
Jesus looks at Nicodemus with compassion in his eyes,
and his mind wanders back to that story he knows so well.
Moses, that great man in the wilderness,
and a people full of pain.
Snake bites and rebellion, trouble and despair.
And guided by his God, Moses crafts a way out,
something physical, something real,
a symbol of the present and healing God,
a version of the very thing that is hurting them.
A bronze snake lifted up,
the problem right there, raised high,
and all who look to it would live.
And so Jesus smiles and tells this man,
who is longing for a new start,
that he will be lifted up, raised high,
a version of the very thing that is hurting the world.
Something physical, something real,
a symbol of the present and healing God...
