A Meditation on Psalm 116
I wrote this meditation as a tool to help pray through the Psalms. So often, we can read the Psalms, and forget to stop and reflect on what's being said. The Psalms are ancient prayers, and hopefully this will help you make the prayers your own!
1 I love the Lord because he hears my voice
and my prayer for mercy.
2 Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!
Take a moment to reflect on these verses. God hears your voice. When you speak, He listens.
As you come to prayer now, thank God that ‘he bends down to listen’ to you.
The Psalmist says: ‘I love the LORD because he hears my voice.’
Spend some time telling God the reasons that you love Him.
3 Death wrapped its ropes around me;
the terrors of the grave overtook me.
I saw only trouble and sorrow.
What are the things troubling you today? Is there anything bringing you sorrow, anything making you feel afraid? You can bring these things before God now.
Remember: ‘he bends down to listen’.
As you lay out your sorrow or your fears, reflect on this image of God ‘bending down’ to hear your prayers.
How does it feel to know God is attentive to your prayers?
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“Please, Lord, save me!”
We know that God is ‘bending down to listen’. He hears us when we call on his name.
Use this moment to call out to God. Ask him to come and speak to you. Make your requests known to him (Philippians 4:6).
