A creative poem which unpacks the thoughts of Simeon, as the infant Jesus is presented in the temple. The repeated refrain is from Luke 2:34. There are contemporary resonances with issues of injustice - you could link this into prayers of intercession.

Extract from the script:

As the old man looks into those tiny eyes he knows, the waiting is over…
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
He has hung around a long time for this moment
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
Endured long nights and lonely days
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
He’s prayed, hoped, doubted, trusted, battered the ceiling with his cries
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’

And now at last he holds the fragile answer in his arms
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
The wide eyed, vulnerable way forward for the world
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
And in an instant he knows the terrible, wonderful, heart-breaking, life-giving truth
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’

The rich cannot go on exploiting the poor
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
The powerful will not always hold sway
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
Dishevelled shepherds, out watching their flocks, will visit kings
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
Dominant, child-murdering tyrants will crumble and fade
‘This child will be the falling and rising of many…’
