The Bitter Sweet

Written By:

Bible Refs: Matt 26:38-40

This is a prayer to be read by one voice.  Before the prayer begins (perhaps during a song before the prayer time) hand out ‘sour’ sweets.  You can purchase packets of jelly sweets that are covered with ‘sour’ sugar.  They come in many guises and different price brackets, but are usually referred to as ‘sour’ and are easily obtained from your local supermarket.  Tell the congregation to hold onto their sweet until it is time for the prayer.  Then, as the prayer and Bible verses are read and people eat the sweet, they will first of all experience a sour taste and then, soon after the taste of the sweet jelly inside.  The prayer reflects both the bitterness and the sweetness of Jesus' death on the cross.
