Remember Me and Abandoned - poems

Bible Refs: Luke 23:42-43
Lectionary Weeks: Reign of Christ / Proper 29, Ordinary/Lectionary 34 (Year C)

Two riffs on the words spoken by one of the theives crucified next to Jesus. "Remember Me" touches on how we relate to these very real and difficult emotions. The congregation could say the "Remember me" line, with the leader speaking the other lines. "Abandoned" looks at the scene from the perspective of Jesus.

Extract from "Remember me":

Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.
The kind of words many of us mutter, when we feel all is lost.

Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.
The kind of ‘clutching at straw’ words.

Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.
When we’re up against the wall.

Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.
When we’ve lost our reference points.

Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.
When all the faith we once had has vanished.

Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.
When hope is gone, and we feel lost and alone...

Extract from "Abandoned":

He’s dying, lost, alone, abandoned by friends and bereft of his father.
Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.

The words come at him from the guy dying next to him:
Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.

They touch him like a warm hand on the shoulder.
Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.

It’s not the end, he’s a king, with a kingdom.
Remember me, when you come into your kingdom.

Unexpected encouragement, from an unexpected source.
Remember me, when you come into your kingdom...
