Praise Shout

Written By:
Sam Hargreaves
Themes: peace, praise
Bible Refs: Psalm 66

This praise shout is a mash-up of Psalm 66, using both the NIV and the Message version of the Bible, with inspiring images in the PowerPoint.

Use it to start a worship time, or in the middle of a set of songs. We tend to use it sandwiched between an upbeat song; keeping the music going instrumentally during the praise shout. You may want to use it in a call-and-response fashion, with the phrases on the left being said by the leader only. Make sure that the band, or anyone on the platform, has access to the words and can help take a lead, especially in the ‘make a noise’ sections when you can encourage people to do just that!

Sam co-leads engageworship.org with his wife Sara. He completed the LST degree in Theology, Music and Worship, and now teaches in the department two days per week. He also co-leads RESOUNDworship.org, the free worship song website, and has led musical and creative worship at events like Spring Harvest, New Wine North and the Baptist Assembly alternative stream. Their book 'How would Jesus lead worship' was published by BRF in 2009.

I recently used this at a ladies conference where there was a large spread of ages and church backgrounds. It had a huge impact and everyone responded really positively to the sections on 'make a noise'. Great!

We used this in the Big Top at Spring Harvest 2010. The band Trent started a driving beat and I waited for the PowerPoint to appear on the screen - but the computer had crashed! After a bit of red-facedness from me and the band singing a verse and a chorus, they got the computer running and it went down really well!

Sam - did we tell you the about the time that a rather well known US worship leader came over to the UK and started his set with a conch shell? He went to blow through the shell to make a horn like sound and, unfortunately, the shell had been damaged in transit. What really came out was more of a fruit based noise... it was very very difficult to keep a straight face after that!

Your little problem was nothing compared to that (and we loved the chant as well - worked really well!)

We used the Praise shout at a youth camp for 9-14 year olds. Really helpful to get people making some noise and being happy to sing louder when we moved into the sung worship afterwards.

Hi
I'm just back from Spring Harvest Minehead where I was on the British Sign language interpreting team. On Day 4's evening there was a DVD of Isaiah 58 to a sort of rap rhythm. My team leader interpreted this, capturing the source style brilliantly. I felt I would very much like to have a go at interpreting this myself as part of my development (I am not yet fully qualified). I asked about obtaining it and was told it was Sam Hargreaves' work. Is this likely to become available?
