Lectionary Weeks: Second Sunday in Lent (Year C)

A development of Jesus' lament over Jerusalem, embracing his life and death, and ending with his continued intercession for us today.

Excerpt from the poem:

As Jesus neared Jerusalem his heart fractured:
‘How long I’ve been waiting to draw my people close to me…’

As he told his tales of the kingdom,
as he washed the feet of his friends,
as he rode into Jerusalem, a humble king,
as he spent energy on the lowly and unloved:
‘How long I’ve been waiting to draw my people close to me…’

As he reached out to the oppressed and the oppressors,
as he went willingly with those who had come to arrest him,
as he stood before the powerful men of his day,
as he offered his hands to those unmerciful nails:
‘How long I’ve been waiting to draw my people close to me…’

As the terror of isolation gripped the core of his being,
as he threw his head to the skies and gasped his last,
as he woke from death and the earth shuddered,
as he walked back into the lives of others:
‘How long I’ve been waiting to draw my people close to me…’
