Easter Promise

Many things in life promise much but fail to deliver. Putting our faith in money, fame, career, relationships, clothes, food, drink, houses etc can leave us feeling betrayed and empty. But at Easter we can remember one 'empty' promise that offered everything and didn't fail to deliver - the promise of the empty tomb. Jesus promised that in dying he would defeat death and in rising to life again three days later he would give us the gift of eternal life, and that is exactly what he did.  The empty tomb on Easter morning powerfully brings home the message of a promise fulfilled.

Play this powerpoint presentation to the congregation before explaining the pictures, allowing the message to build up gradually. It could work as a start to a service, an introduction to a talk or as part of a time of worship.

Chloe Axford lives in Devon with her husband Nick and their very new baby girl. They are volunteer worship leaders at their church and run an alternative worship stream in the evening service called Creative Space. Chloe spent two years working in creative arts ministry at a church in London and now works as a journalist (when not dreaming up imaginative uses for tea lights, post-it notes and stones).

We used this powerpoint this morning for our contemporary Easter service. We waited until the usual time that our band plays a call to worship song, and instead, turned the lights in our sanctuary completely off, and then in silence, ran the powerpoint. At the end, a girl recited a short 8-line poem about the Resurrection, and the only lights on were focused on a rugged cross draped in white, and our ''tomb'' display. We then went to a photo clip also from this site, Fractal images for Easter, and displayed that while we sang "Christ is Risen" by Matt Maher as the call to worship. At the bridge, we steadily brought lights up in the house, and added the words to the overhead, replacing the photo, as we sang "O, church, come stand in the light, Our God is not dead, He's alive, He's alive!"
