Abraham Prays For Sodom - story version

This is a re-told version of the story where Abraham intercedes for Sodom and Gomorroah. It helps the audience appriciate some of what it would have been like for Abraham to do this in such a bold way.

Extract from the story:

"Sodom and Gomorrah," sighed the Lord, in a someone-is-in-deep-trouble sort of way. "Word has it that Sodom and Gomorrah is one evil address, and that wickedness, down there, is a way of life. I suppose I should take a closer look."

Now Abraham had family in that town, so he knew that not everyone was sold out to sin. And that's why he approached the Lord. And that's why he asked, somewhat sheepishly at first, "Are you really intending to punish everyone down there? The good as well as the wicked? Let's say there are fifty good people in the city. Would you really destroy the city, and let them suffer the same punishment as the evil ones?

“I'm surprised by this. I really am. You're the Judge of the Whole World. Surely you, above everyone, should do what is just."

"All right, then," the Lord replied. "If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom and Gomorrah, I will forgive everyone else, for their sake."

"I'm ashes. I'm dust," said Abraham. "Here today. Gone tomorrow. I know my place, but allow me, please, to say one more thing.

“What if there aren't quite fifty. Good people, I mean. What if the number of the righteous is short, by, say...five. Surely you wouldn't destroy everyone for the sake of five?"

"All right," said the Lord. "I will spare the city if I find forty-five who are righteous."

"What about forty, then?" Asked Abraham, subtracting another five.

"Forty it is," agreed the Lord...
