Linking Songs - Why and How?

An article and video on creating 'flow' in sung worship

Written By:
Sam Hargreaves

Here is an article we wrote for the Royal School of Church Music's magazine Sunday By Sunday, on Linking Songs and Flow. We also filmed a video to demonstrate the different musical transitions. You can view the article on this page or download it as a pdf from the link on the right.

The assumed audience was a church looking to transition from only using traditional music into including more contemporary styles. We'd like to thank RSCM for allowing us to reproduce it here, and hope that you will check out more of their excellent resources.

Sam co-leads engageworship.org with his wife Sara. He completed the LST degree in Theology, Music and Worship, and an MA in Contemporary Worship from Kings College London. He was Programme Leader for the LST Theology and Worship course and now teaches as a guest lecturer there. He also co-leads the RESOUNDworship.org worship song website, and has led musical and creative worship at events like Spring Harvest, Youtwork Summit and Greenbelt. Sam and Sara's book 'How would Jesus lead worship' was published by BRF in 2009.

Thank you for sharing this article. I plan to use it as part of an on-going dialogue with our church-planting team as we continue to wrestle through the lay-out of the 'music/worship' portion of our Sunday services and how to help all attenders grow in their knowledge of God and their intimacy with God. Sometimes, it is difficult for people of various generations to be willing to view changes/preferences as truly beneficial instead of simply 'the next new thing/a waste of time' or be willing to view traditions/preferences as truly beneficial instead of simply being 'stuck in the mud/lazy.'
